On the north-western edge of the département, Magny-en-Vexin lies on the route of the Chaussée Jules-César, the Roman road that led from Paris to Rouen, as well as on the road from Beauvais to Mantes. This crossroads position favored its development in the Middle Ages. In the 16th century, François I granted the town the status of a city, and several different religious communities settled here. Today, Magny-en-Vexin has a population of around 5,800, and its historic center boasts a remarkable architectural heritage. It is surrounded by a circular boulevard that marks the former site of the fortifications.
