It was in the 12th century that the Val-Saint-Germain became known, when the monks of the Vaux-de-Cernay abbey cleared the forests and drained the marshes, as was done at the time. The first lord of the place, Jean de Saint-Germain, established his authority there nearly a century later. However, few sources document the ancient history of the commune, except for an act of 1397 which mentions a feudal manor. On the other hand, it was in the 15th century that the second castle (du Marais) was built. A third castle was built around 1620, and the outbuildings - that is, all that remains of it - have been transformed into a museum.
