Looted by the Normans in 911, Etampes returned to the historic royal domain under Hugues Capet in the 10th century. Originally a county, Etampes became a duchy under François I. Its heritage was damaged during the bombardments of the Second World War. Etampes remains one of Essonne's top tourist destinations, and is listed as a Town of Art and History, with 26 listed monuments: the town hall, the collegiate church of Notre-Dame and its 11th-century crypt, numerous 12th-century religious buildings, the Guinette tower, the Place Saint-Gilles and the Maison des Piliers, various Renaissance townhouses...
