Accolée in Lons-Le-Saunier, the town of Montmorot has its history dating back to the iron age (- 800; - 50) with ceramics found on the spot. The origin of the name of this commune (Mont-morot de mor, more, moree, mute meaning marshes) would come from its location on a hill surrounded by swamps. The inhabitants are called the Catharus. The construction of a castle in the Middle Ages embellishes the site. The commune is occupied by the Sequanais and the Gallo-Romans before being destroyed during the barbaric invasions of the fourth century. After his restoration, the feudal remains gradually resumed his rights and became a chestnut of a beautiful aura in the eleventh century to be destroyed in the seventeenth century. The stones of the ruins of the medieval fort have built a saunerie. This development of the resources of Piedmont Juran led to the growth of salt trade in the xviiie.
