In the middle of the Valdoniellu forest and surrounded by the island's highest mountains, the first thing you come across is the artificial lake of the dam, and the setting is superb, amidst forests and mountains, with the Scala di Santa-Regina to follow towards Corte. You'll have to be inquisitive to discover Calacuccia's hidden charms, taking in the narrow streets and stone staircases. It's the capital of the Niolu. Its village of old houses with external staircases is full of character, and one of the mansions dates back to 1560. You can visit the parish church of Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul, and see the carved wooden Christ with his expressive face.
