Once guarded by two castles of which only ruins remain, Cauro has retained its mountain charm, and boasts a beautiful medieval belfry. The village is best known for housing the skull of Sampiero Corso, which was sealed in one of the stones of the church of Santa Barbara. After the hero's death, his head was put on display in Ajaccio, but the authorities ordered that it be removed to the church. It is still not known how the people of Cauro managed to obtain the skull, which was recovered by affixing a marble plaque for parishioners who died for their country. Local farmers' market on Saturdays in the square, in season.
