Forni di Sotto is a mountain resort surrounded by pastures and surrounded by the green (and in winter snow-covered) peaks of the Dolomites and the Carnic Alps. It is a good base for wonderful excursions in the upper Tagliamento valley and in the natural park of the Friulian Dolomites. Forni di Sotto was completely razed in 1944 by the Nazis, but some ancient structures have survived, such as the church of San Lorenzo and its cycle of frescoes by Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo, a 15th century Friulian painter. In August, the Fiesta dal Pais brings together locals and tourists around the specialties of the local gastronomy.
