Formerly a German-speaking community, Sauris is one of the most characteristic towns in Carnia with beautiful stone and wood houses. It is also the highest town in the region (between 1,200 and 1,400 meters above sea level). Famous for its production of ricotta, beer and smoked prosciutto, Sauris is the starting point for hikes in the Alps to the numerous malghe scattered in the surrounding mountains. In these alpine chalets, cheese, butter and milk are produced. Sometimes a few rooms are reserved for visitors. Next to Sauris is the lake of the same name where, in summer, you can swim and practice water sports.
