At the sight of the lake, at the foot of the high mountains, doubt grips the tourist. Images of Bled still linger. Here, there's no Baroque island, with its church, mother of the place. In Bohinj, the church has stood guard over the mainland since the Middle Ages, a lighthouse perched close to the waters of the lake flowing under the arches of the bridge. Indeed, Bohinj is not Bled. The view here immediately embraces the irreproachable, somewhat cold and austere nature. The focus is on the blue water, the forests, the peaks and Triglav (literally "Three Heads"), the highest point in the Julian Alps and Slovenia's highest peak, rising to 2,864 m above sea level. It now adorns the flag of Slovenia. Bohinj is not a town, but a splendid valley that extends from Soteska to Ukanc. The upper valley is home to picturesque villages such as Srednja Vas, Studor and Česnjica, while the lower valley has the largest village, Bohinjska Bistrica, population 1,890, 6 km from Bohinjsko Jezero, the Bohinj lake. There is plenty of accommodation. Part of the Triglav National Park, the summit of which can be seen from Ribčev Laz, the village has preserved its wild character, mainly consisting of tourist accommodation near Lake Bohinj. Sports enthusiasts will be delighted by the many activities on offer, while the more contemplative will enjoy the trails in this little corner of paradise.
