Just a few kilometers from Italy and Austria, at the foot of the Julian Alps, the Karawanken mountain range and in the heart of the Sava Dolinka valley, Kranjska Gora is just one big village with 5,200 inhabitants. Its existence probably began in the 11th century. Tourism developed here very early, at the beginning of the 20th century. It is the country's most important winter sports resort. This is where the men's Alpine Skiing World Cup is held every year. As for Planica, it is world-renowned for its ski jumps. The city is multilingual and fully European. After the winter season, tourists arrive here in large numbers, either individually or by bus. In the mornings, walkers, equipped with rucksacks and walking sticks, leave the village early to explore the many trails. Austrian neighbors take advantage of the more attractive fuel prices to queue up at the filling stations. In the evening, the border atmosphere continues in the gostilna. People chat in Italian and German, the Austrian version, as they come here as neighbors to enjoy the local cuisine, its generous quantities and its prices too.Kranjska Gora dates back to the 11th century. It is said that the first church was built on the instructions of the Queen of Spain. Tourism has a long history here, with the first tourist association founded in 1904.
