With its 4,800 inhabitants, this village, dominated to the northeast by the Škofjeloško Hribovje massif, attracts skiers on the slopes of Črni Vrh (1,291 m) and hikers. In summer, well-marked hiking trails allow you to conquer its mountains, with Porezen at 1,632 m as its highest point. Cerkno also celebrates Shrove Tuesday, with its traditional Laufarji (carnival masks), and the heroism of the Franja Hospital partisans. The town is home to the only spa in the Julian Alps. More unusually, it is here that the world's oldest musical instrument has been found, a flute some sixty thousand years old.
