To appreciate the most beautiful monuments and the magnificent panorama of Oviedo, you have to leave the city and go to Mount Naranco, 634 metres above sea level, which is reached via Avenida Ingeniero Batac (to the north-east). There is a small palace and a 9th century church, jewels of what experts have called Asturian pre-Romanesque art. This refined and profoundly innovative architecture is the result of the blending of Roman, Visigothic, Carolingian and Byzantine techniques, which came together in the region to serve the first Asturian rulers. An artistic heritage directly precursor to Romanesque art.
