Clinging to the foothills of the Sierra de San Pedro and surrounded by oak forests, the origin of an important cork production industry, it is defended by the splendid fortress of Don Alvaro de Luna, whose keep and walls dominate the white houses of the village and enclose the Villa Adentro. Below it, halfway up the hillside, is the 15th-century church of Santa María del Mercado, which houses a large 16th-century altarpiece, the attraction of the old town. Surrounded by walls with numerous towers, it has medieval houses with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque porches.
