About 15 kilometres north of Gijón in the direction of Cabo Peñas is the beautiful village of Luanco, with a population of about 5,700. Once devoted to whale hunting, its port nowadays is devoted to the fishing of bonito, sardines and spiders, among other sea products. Its paseo marítimo offers a pleasant stroll to the Marina beach, where you can see the Santa María church overlooking the Cantabrian Sea. Many lacemakers still work in the village using the ancient techniques of las mallas. You can see them at work: ask at the tourist office.
