The capital of the county of El Bierzo is built at the confluence of the Sil River and its tributary, the Boeza River. The city developed under the reign of Ferdinand II of Leon, who invited the Order of the Temple to settle there in the 12th century in order to control this area of passage. The fortress, built on the left bank of the Sil, dates from this period. Later, in 1498, Isabel the Catholic endowed the city with a pilgrim's hospice, which is still open.
