The origins of the village are uncertain, but are thought to be linked to those of the abbey of Honcourt, located just two kilometers downstream and founded around the year 1000. It is highly probable that the abbey owned the village of Breitenbach from the outset. At the time, there were many vine-growing hillsides, which ensured the village's prosperity. There was also a small chapel for the villagers. For more than three centuries, Breitenbach was the scene of legal battles over the possession of its forest and the exploitation of its timber, the only source of sustenance for its inhabitants.
