Steige owes its worldwide fame to Pasteur. It was here that he performed the first vaccination against rabies on a human being, Joseph Meister, a young inhabitant of the village bitten by a contaminated dog. This pretty little village in the Vosges is also known for its distillery know-how. Its old parish church has a beautiful baptismal font and an 18th century altar. The present chapel in the cemetery is the remains of the original church of the village. This one, built at the end of the 17th century, was transformed during the French Revolution into a "temple of the Supreme Being", then into a stable.
