A small village of 654 inhabitants at the foot of a steep mountain overlooking the Fáskrúðsfjörður fjord, 80 km from Egilsstaðir. Offshore, the three islands of Æðey, Andey and Skrúður, a veritable bird paradise, are only accessible by boat. Fáskrúðsfjörður was once one of the main bases for the French, who fished off the eastern fjords over a century ago. They built a hospital and chapel here. The cemetery, where both French and Belgian sailors are buried, is located on the north shore of the fjord at a place called Krossar. And you'll find that some street names are in both Icelandic and French.
