Borgarfjörður Eystri is a quiet fishing village with about 100 inhabitants, located at the end of road 94. It is a good spot for seabird and marshland watching, and even one of the best in the country for puffin viewing in summer. It is surrounded by colourful rhyolite mountains, dominated by the impressive basalt ridges of Dyrfjöll, the "gateway to the mountain" (the name comes from the large gap visible in the middle of the ridges), which is particularly impressive. Iceland's most famous painter, Kjarval, lived in Borgarfjörður Eystri at the turn of the century. The beautiful nature around him inspired his greatest works.
