The small, flat island of Papey is only about 2 km² in size, but is surrounded by numerous other islets and islands teeming with different species of birds, and grey seals can often be spotted on the reefs. Nesting cliffs, 20 to 40 m high, are plentiful and man has long been climbing the rocks to collect eggs. A curious rock formation called Kastali, the "castle", dominates the port of Árhöfn, on the western side of the island. This is where all Papey elves live. In the north of the island, another formation called Einbúi, the "solitary", is said to be the elves' church..
