Not far from Route 1 coming from Egilsstaðir, on Highway 92, Reyðarfjörður is set in stunning surroundings. The fjord is framed by imposing rocky peaks on one side and green hills on the other. A hiking trail leads from the town center along the Búðará river. Reyðarfjörður is famous for being home to the controversial Fjardaál aluminium smelter. Completed in 2009, the project is causing controversy due to its harmful environmental impact. It is also the second-largest town in the Fjarðabyggð municipality, which covers the various fjords from Mjóifjörður to Breiðdalsvík.
