In Herðubreiðarlindir, the "springs of Herðubreið", the rare freshwater springs in the volcanic desert of Ódáðahraun make up an oasis coiled at the foot of Herðubreið, the "mountain with broad shoulders". It is a tabular volcano, born under the ice, with a flat summit always covered with snow. Its black silhouette is often dull.
