Home to around 2,250 inhabitants, Húsavík, the "bay of houses", is a charming little port filled with fishing boats with colorful clinker hulls. The pretty church, dating from the turn of the century, is one of the most beautiful in Iceland. A trail climbs to the top of the mountain overlooking the town. From there, you can look out over the bay of Skjálfandi, with its snow-capped mountains plunging into the ocean. In the harbour itself, birdwatchers will easily spot numerous larids and eiders. Húsavík is also one of the best places to see the midnight sun, and a popular starting point for whale watching in Iceland.
