Egilsstaðir, the eastern capital with a population of 2,260, is the administrative center of this region known for its mild climate. The town lies on the shores of Lögurinn, a lake whose waters are coloured by glacial debris. This 30 km-long lake is actually a bulge in one of Iceland's longest rivers, the Lagarfljót. Its Scottish loch-like appearance and opaline color reinforce the belief that the lake is home to Lagarfljótsormurinn, a cousin of the Loch Ness monster. Here you'll find plenty of places to stay and rest before continuing on to the Eastern Fjords.
