Breiðalsvík is a small fishing port with a population of 143 (209 for the district), situated at the entrance to wide inland valleys. The town is small, but set in verdant surroundings that are well worth a visit. These valleys are surrounded by majestic mountains, mostly basalt but also rhyolite, with peaks rising to over 1,000 m above sea level. Several hiking trails lead up to the Breiðalsheiði plateau, often criss-crossed by wild reindeer. Upstream on the Breiðalsá River, salmon fishermen can often be seen. Ask at the tourist office for fishing permits.
