Neskaupstaður is one of the largest villages in the east of the country, with a population of 1,450, and lives mainly from fishing (trawlers and numerous small boats), but also from farming in the countryside at the bottom of the fjord in a beautiful mountainous setting. It is the main municipality of Fjarðabyggð. You can take a boat trip to Norðfjörður Bay. In this part of the east lie some of Iceland's most fascinating sites, such as the red rocks of Rauðubjörg and Nípa, the country's highest cliff. Birdwatching and an introduction to the tales and legends that abound in this remote region.
