Located on the northern shore of the widest fjord on the east coast, Eskifjörður, a port with a population of 1,100, is dominated by Holmatindur (985 m). It's possible to reach its summit via a fairly arduous path, but the view is well worth the effort! Völvuleiði, the "seer's grave", is located high above. Legend has it that a seer once lived on the Sómastaðir farm in Reyðarfjörður. Before she died, she asked to be buried in the most beautiful spot on the fjord, predicting that as long as her bones were there, the fjord would be protected. Eskifjörður's old quarters have been preserved. Most of the houses have been restored.
