The small port of Djúpivogur (355 inhabitants) is composed of a few houses around old wooden quays where a handful of fishing boats are anchored. One will notice the fish dryers which frame the road. Before the establishment of the Danish monopoly on trade, Djúpivogur was a Hanseatic trading post. At that time, just like Vestmannaeyjar, the small port was attacked by Algerian pirates in 1627. The pirates captured more than a hundred people (to be sold as slaves), killing the rest of the population. A dark past fortunately no longer relevant, you will enjoy today this relaxing walk.
