It is the largest of the Borromean islands (330 metres long and 220 metres wide) and the one with the most intimate and silent atmosphere. The island is famous for the 16th century Borromeo Palace, named after the noble family that owned it. But its great curiosity is its eight-hectare garden of rare plants and exotic flowers where peacocks, parrots and pheasants live freely. You must visit it during the flowering of its azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias. There is also a 200 year old Kashmir cypress and a monumental "staircase of the dead" decorated with beautiful wisteria.
