In the heart of Valsesia, a rich and ancient mountain region, Varallo is a fascinating place. In the 15th century, a monk returning from the Holy Land decided to build a place that would reflect the spirit and atmosphere of Palestine. Thus was built the Sacro Monte, a sanctuary whose grounds are dotted with chapels decorated with frescoes and human-sized polychrome statues illustrating the life of Christ. You'll soon understand why this incredible complex is a World Heritage Site. Varallo is renowned for its rich handicrafts, in particular the local puncetto valsesiano lace and carpentry.
