Ranked as one of Italy's most beautiful villages, Orta San Giulio is as charming for its natural setting and heritage as it is for its serene atmosphere. On the shores of Lake Orta, less touristy than its neighbors, the village has preserved its narrow streets with wrought-iron balconies and beautiful stately homes dating from the 14th to 18th centuries. Its name comes from the Latin hortus conclusus, meaning enclosed garden. In Piazza Motta, the Palazzo Comunale (1582) was the seat of executive and legislative power during the region's period of self-management. Don't miss the Madonna del Sasso sanctuary and San Giulio Island, just a stone's throw from Orta.
