Located on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore, the town of Arona grew rapidly following Barbarossa's destruction of Milan in 1162, when a number of influential families took up residence on the lakeshore. Owned by the Borromeo family from 1439 to 1797, Arona is the birthplace of St. Charles Borromeo (1538-1584), a leading figure in the region's political and religious history. The historic center is rich in characteristic buildings, such as the Church of the Holy Martyrs and the Villa Ponti. In the lower part of the town, you'll find the 15th-century Palace of Justice.
