A dozen kilometers northwest of Biella, Oropa, at an altitude of 1,200 meters, can be reached by winding roads that wind through the mountains. An internationally renowned pilgrimage site, Oropa's life revolves around devotion to the Black Madonna. The hamlet is also home to a meteorological and seismic station set up in 1874 by Francesco Denza, a Neapolitan Barnabite priest known as the founder of meteorological science in Italy. This splendid natural setting also boasts a wonderful botanical garden, which can be visited daily in summer. The area is classified as a Nature Reserve.
