To the southwest of Procida is the islet of Vivara, connected to the rest of the island by an artificial bridge. Formed by an ancient volcanic crater that is partly submerged, Vivara has been a nature reserve since the 1970s - which has saved it from being turned into a tourist village! A nesting site for several species such as the peregrine falcon, the islet is covered with a rich flora characteristic of the Mediterranean maquis. It is also home to archaeological excavations which are accessible in summer. Mycenaean traders (1400 BC - 1100 BC) obviously used the place as a stopover during their crossing of the Mediterranean.
