The smallest town on the island of Ischia is located in the northwestern part of the island. It was here, in 770 BC, that the first Greek colony in the western Mediterranean, Pithecusses, was founded. In the 1950s and 1960s, Lacco Ameno was frequented by film stars and European royalty. Today, it is mostly tourists who come to relax and admire this small town with its white houses and tree-lined streets. It is also known for its emblematic Fungo, a volcanic rock that looks like a mushroom, 10 m high, ejected from Mount Epomeo several thousand years ago
