Baios appears in Greek mythology as one of the companions of Ulysses. He is buried here and is said to have given his name to the locality. During the Antiquity, the Roman aristocracy frequented the town for its beauty and the quality of its thermal waters. The town was home to the sumptuous villas of the greatest figures of the time, such as Caesar, Augustus, Pompey and Cicero. The subsidence of the ground due to the bradyseism dragged the Roman vestiges in the depths of the sea
