Perched on the highest rocky outcrop of the island, at an altitude of 90 metres, the medieval village of Terra Murata is the ancient historical centre of Procida. Protected by steep cliffs facing the sea and by fortified walls, the site offered its inhabitants a refuge against the incursions of pirates and Saracens. Behind the somewhat austere exterior lies a series of narrow streets, arches, staircases and pastel-coloured facades, with beautiful views of the Gulf of Naples. The complex is dominated by the 16th-century Palazzo d'Avalos, which was converted into a prison until 1988, and by the Abbey of San Michele Archangelo.
