Fontanellato is a small agricultural town in the Bassa Parmense, the Padana plain, 20 km from Parma, between the rivers Taro and Stirone. Fontanellato attracts visitors for its fortress that occupies the center of the village. The imposing structure is surrounded by a wide moat and its foundation is dated 1124 by the Pallavicino family. In 1386 the feud was ceded to the Sanvitale family, who owned the fortress until 1948, enlarging it and transforming it into an elegant noble residence. The room decorated by Parmigianino at the request of Count Galeazzo Sanvitale and his wife Paola Gonzaga is a marvel.
