Verdi had a privileged relationship with Busseto. Here he found his patron, protector and future father-in-law in the person of Antonio Barezzi, a wholesaler in alcohol and colonial goods, passionate about music. When Verdi left to enroll at the Milan Conservatory, and after he was rejected because he "didn't have enough qualities", the friends of Busseto brought him back home and, with their own money, paid for private lessons. When these same friends learned that Verdi was about to accept a position as organist in Monza, they brought him back almost by force. Busseto has a museum dedicated to Verdi that is highly recommended.
