In the heart of the Monferrato hills, Asti is a small jewel of urban architecture and an important place for the production and sale of agricultural and wine products. An elliptical historical center, intersected by medieval alleys that delimit the area called Recinto dei Nobili (the enclosure of the nobles), once a stronghold of the tower-houses of the most influential families. With the demographic expansion, in the 14th century this enclosure was replaced by the more popular Recinto dei Borghigiani (the enclosure of the inhabitants of the village). A pleasant stroll along the streets lined with arcades and the main street (Corso Vittorio Alfieri), proud of its beautiful 18th century palaces.
