Albugnano, in the Monferrato region of Italy, is famous for its Vezzolano Abbey, one of the most important religious complexes in Piedmont. Legend has it that the Abbey was built in the 8th century, when Charlemagne, at war with the Lombards, decided to build a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. However, the architectural ensemble as it has come down to us dates back to the 11th century, in a combination of Romanesque and Gothic styles, with alternating use of sandstone and brick. The church and abbey are also remarkable for their decoration, including some beautiful 14th-century frescoes.
