Of all the towns in Monferrato, Acqui Terme is the most picturesque and attractive. Under the Empire, it reached its apogee thanks to its healing springs. A powerful bishopric since the 4th century, Acqui experienced a moment of splendor in the Middle Ages. In 1278, it was annexed to the Marquisate of Monferrato, joining the Duchy of Savoy in 1708. A lively town, some of its streets resemble Ligurian carruggi (narrow, labyrinthine alleys), and its layout converges on the center, the Bollente (the Boiling), where sulfurous water releases its vapors. The wellness craze has restored the spa to its former glory.
