The capital of the lower valley, Taggia has preserved its medieval fan-shaped structure. While only the ruins of the fortress remain, other historic buildings are still standing: churches, palaces and convents, the most famous of which is the 15th-century convent of San Domenico, home to a fine collection of sacred art by such masters as Ludovico Brea, Gregorio De Ferrari and Parmigianino. Today, only men are allowed to retreat here. But Taggia's fabulous treasure comes from the land. It's the olive, the taggiasca, a variety with delicate flesh that produces one of the world's finest oils.
