Canale, the main centre of the Roero region, with a population of about 5,600, is a pretty town perched on a hill. The town was founded in 1260. In the narrow streets of the old town centre, the Baroque church of San Giovanni stands out, as does the 14th-century Torre Civica. The Castle of Canale, built in the 13th century, has been the property of the Malabaila family since the 16th century (it is accessible to visitors by appointment only). The Enoteca regionale del Roero, one of the five wine cellars in the Langhe and Roero region, with some 60 wine producers, is located in Via Roma.
