The view of the reddish Waimea Mountains is one of the most sublime on the island. Anyone who sees this sculpted landform can't help but think of the Grand Canyon. It is this similarity that earned the national park its name. Except that Kauai's, at 1,105 meters deep and 19 km long, is much smaller. It is a major earthquake that would have designed the canyon, precipitating many streams into the Waimea River, the only river of the site. These streams caused intense soil erosion over several million years. The rock rusted in a way, which gave this pretty laterite color
