This commune of just over 1,000 inhabitants was first mentioned in 796. The current presbytery was built in 1730 from the stones of the former château du Weckenthal, which dominated the town until 1652. From the French Revolution onwards, the site was occupied by a fine farmhouse with outbuildings. It was destroyed during the First World War. The fighting at Hartmanswillerkopf forced the Berrwillerois to leave their village in January 1915. So much damage had to be repaired after 1918 that Berrwiller had to wait until the year 2000 to return to a population level equivalent to that of the early 20th century!
