The human settlement in Wittelsheim is believed to date back to the Bronze Age, as evidenced by the discovery of isolated objects, swords or a tumultuous necropolis from the Hallstatt period. When the Romans invaded it, the region was already well populated and most historians located between Cernay and Wittelsheim the famous battle of Ochsenfeld which marked Caesar's victory over the Swedish warriors. In addition to these remains, Wittelsheim also has many facilities from the discovery of potash mines in 1904, which increased the population from 1,500 to 10,000 in less than 50 years and had a significant impact on the landscape.
