Although Cernay has been ravaged by war on several occasions, the streets in the center have remained faithful to the square layout of the old town. The best-preserved medieval monument is the "porte haute" or "porte de Thann", now a historical museum. In a charter of 1271, the term " oppidum " appeared, meaning "fortified town". Cernay is surrounded by a double rampart: the outer wall is 12 meters high and 1.5 meters thick on average, while the inner wall is 4 meters high. The former ditches have been transformed into gardens. The "Fil rouge" itinerary is a signposted tour of the historic and architectural aspects.
