Just 20 km south of Quetzaltenango and 10 km from Zunil lie the Fuentes Georginas hot springs. Gushing from the adjacent volcano, they were first developed in the first half of the 20th century, under the presidency of General Jorge Ubico, in power from 1931 to 1944. At the bottom of a lushly vegetated combe, pools were dug to receive the waters with their characteristic sulphur smell. The first, deep enough to swim in, is just beyond the entrance, on the pick-up access road. The second is at the end of the path winding through the bungalows. Built at the bottom of the gorge, it's completely surrounded by nature. Next to it, rudimentary cabins provide changing facilities. While Xela locals consider the Fuentes Georginas to be a must-see, we recommend them to travellers with time on their hands, or who need to relax after climbing Volcán Tajumulco or Santa María.
