The city of Huehuetenango, capital of the department of the same name, is located at an altitude of 1,900 meters above sea level, dominated by the beautiful mountains of the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes. The city known as "Huehue" was known as Xinabajul in pre-Hispanic times, meaning "between the ravines, capital of the Lord of the Ladies". Even today, it is the main seat of this Mayan ethnic group. If the city in itself is of very limited interest, its surroundings, sublime, are the subject of a real tourist boom at the national level since the beginning of the pandemic. In cause: a nature of a rare beauty, whose landscapes seem sometimes to be of the imagination, between turquoise lagoons and massif bathed in an ocean of clouds.Still far from the western itineraries and forgotten by some travel guides, the department would see only one foreign visitor out of 1 000, according to some agencies. Moreover, since the city is free from the presence of INGUAT, and the other offices of the organization have little information on the department, it is sometimes more convenient to explore it with a tour operator from Antigua, Atitlán or Quetzaltenango.
